"The Little School with the Big Heart!"

In 1906 Midlothian became an Independent School District. MISD opened its first schools, a high school, grammar school, and a primary school, all set at the present J.R. Irvin site at 700 West Ave H in 1907. Additional construction was done in 1914. Later added on to the building in 1921 were Dell Mason Dees Hall, an auditorium, and a classroom addition. In 1954 the school now known as J.R. Irvin, named after a district administrator, became the mainstay of the educational building in Midlothian and served K-12 grades. The most recent renovations to Irvin were completed in 1998. Irvin serves students in grades K-5th including the only Head Start program in the district. (View Attendance Zone Map.)

The Irvin Elementary motto is “Making Tracks With Teamwork”. Parents and community are encouraged to be actively involved in making Irvin a campus where students can reach their maximum academic potential. Because Irvin is such a small campus, teachers are able to get to know the students personally. This building of relationships helps students develop their character as well as achieve academic success. The Irvin Elementary staff will continue to strive to bring a quality education to the children they serve.

J R Irvin provides a multitude of services designed to meet the individual needs of each learner. Various instructional programs include: ESL (English as a Second Language); RISE (Reading IS Essential); Special Education Services for qualifying students including Speech, Resource, Inclusion, Content Mastery/Learning Lab, and Multisensory Teaching Approach for children with dyslexia; Gifted and Talented programs; Service Learning projects; Community Service Problem Solving; and Technology Integration in all subjects. Extension programs include: L.E.A.P. tutoring for extended school-day learning opportunities serving identified at-risk students, Destination Imagination for creative exploration, and Math Pentathlon Competition.

J R Irvin has a state accountability rating of Exemplary.

We have an active PTV (Parent, Teacher, Volunteer) that contributes greatly to Irvin students and staff. A big thank you to all who help make Irvin PTV the best! PTV events include: book fairs, fundraisers, class parties, family fun nights, holiday shop, school carnival & field day.
